DIY Spa Tips For Home Spa

Native Australian Healing Ingredients

Mustard Foot Bath
Fizzy Feet
Foot Fetish
Lemon Myrrh Foot Deodorant
Bush Foot Scrub
Native Flower Foot Soak

At the end of a long day many of us complain that our feet are "killing us." Yet, all too often, we expect them to endure the discomfort of high heels or ill-fitting shoes. With the miles they take you they deserve just as much, if not more, attention than other parts of your body. Treat your feet right and prepare any of these quick-and-easy foot pampering recipes from the comfort of your own home.

Mustard Foot Bath

Great on a cold night to warm you up, the mustard works to warm and relax tired feet, the spearmint refreshes them, the eucalyptus relieves aches and pains and the lemon myrtle is an antibacterial and fungus-fighting oil.

Ingredients
- 5 tablespoons mustard powder
- 2 tablespoons spearmint leaves
- 2 1/2 cups (625ml) pure spring water
- 5 drops lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) essential oil
- 4 drops eucalyptus essential oil

Method
Make an infusion with the mustard, spearmint and water. Add the oils as you fill your foot bath with warm water (the water temperature to suit you).

Fizzy Feet

Create your own foot spa with this fun foot bath which will relax your feet and soften the skin for easier exfoliation.

Ingredients
- 2 drops essential oil of your choice, or try lemon and black pepper
- 1/2 cup (about 100g) sodium bicarbonate
- 3 teaspoons citric acid (Berocca with vitamin C will do)

Method
Dissolve all the ingredients together in a bowl big enough to use as a foot bath and soak. Exfoliate afterwards, using your favourite foot file.

Foot Fetish

A wonderfully refreshing and cooling creme that soothes and gently softens this hard-working area of skin.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 tablespoons sweet almond oil
- 1 1/2 tablespoons wheatgerm oil
- 2 tablespoons beeswax (unrefined)
- 30 drops spearmint essential oil
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil

Method
Gently heat the first three ingredients until they melt, then cool. When the mixture is lukewarm, add the essential oils. This makes about 1/2 cup (100g) creme.

Massage onto feet and calves to soothe, refresh, cool and soften feet. Store any leftovers in a wide-neck glass jar and refrigerate.

Lemon Myrrh Foot Deodorant

Use this freshly scented spray first thing in the morning to put a spring in your step. The lemon deodorises, while witch hazel is an astringent that decreases the secretions from the sweat glands.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 tablespoons witch hazel
- 5 drops myrrh essential oil
- 5 drops lemon verbena or lemon myrtle essential oil

Method
Blend all ingredients together, store in an atomiser, shake well and spray regularly on clean feet.

Bush Foot Scrub

This is a stimulating treatment from natural product guru Gayle Heron. It uses native mint to help improve circulation and cool the feet; native thyme that is antiviral, antibiotic, diuretic, antiseptic and great for eliminating toxins; and rosemary, a physical and mental stimulant, muscle relaxant and antiseptic that alleviates problem skin. Lavender provides a divine scent and helps to restore balance, enhance relaxation, refresh, energise and promote healing.

Ingredients
- 2 sprigs dried lavender flowers
- 1 teaspoon ground native mint
- 1 teaspoon ground native thyme
- 1 small sprig rosemary, chopped
- 2 tablespoons vegetable or macadamia oil
- 1 teaspoon kaolin
- 1 tablespoon yoghurt
- 2 drops peppermint, sage and rosemary essential oils

Method
Combine all the ingredients and massage well into the feet. If possible, put your feet up for a while before removing with a warm damp cloth.

Native Flower Soak

This is an eye-catching, distinctly Australian, aromatic foot bath devised to relax your feet and soften the skin. The eucalyptus is probably Australia's best-known tree; what is perhaps less well known is that there are over 400 varieties of eucalyptus trees and shrubs and many have anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antibiotic, diuretic, analgesic, deodorising, antiviral, stimulating and grounding properties. Try this foot booster for size!

Combine a blend of native flowers like grevillea, gum, banksia, native frangipani, tea tree (all high in nectar) with rose and lemon myrtle sprigs and aromatic gum leaves. Cover with hot water and cool until a comfortable temperature for feet to be immersed is attained. Sit back and soak for 15-20 minutes.

Finish treatment with a vigorous towel rub to dry feet and massage with macadamia oil scented with a favourite essential oil.
